WELCOME BACK

If you’re getting this – its good news! What a summer. We started off last year with a robust raise only to see cut after cut in state funding. Yet we were able (thus far) to save every job. Naturally, things aren’t what we want, but we’re fighting for you. more...

All of us at PESPA hope you had an enjoyable, long, summer. We have been working on finalizing a contract and getting ready for the new school year. We have been revising our working conditions contract and identifying additions to our bargaining unit. Here is the news….more

LEGISLATURE ADJOURNS – SOME GAINS MADE

The Florida Legislature completed its 60 day regular session Friday, May 4 with some gains for public schools and none of the negatives that have marked the last eight years. In fact, the only real negatives were a sparse budget (because of the significant downturn in construction and home sales) and the fact that, despite early success in Committee, the increase in health insurance subsidy for retirees did not pass. PESPA LEADERS TO ADDRESS SCHOOL BOARD ON NEED FOR NURSES

PESPA has joined with the National Education Association (NEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), our two national affiliates, to bring the issue of school health services to the Pinellas School Board. PESPA Secretary, Kim Palfy, a nurse at Hamilton Disston School, will address the Board Tuesday, March 13, to encourage them to focus on the need to provide more nurses for our students. “The consensus is that we need one nurse for every 750 students and Pinellas has one for every 1,500,” said PESPA President Randy Dodds. “This means that ‘health services’ often fall to our secretaries, associates and clerks rather than to people professionally trained to deliver them.” more

Ms. Henjes has worked for Pinellas schools for ten years and previously served on the PESPA Board and as an Association Representative. Four candidates have filed for three Director seats on the PESPA Board. They are Debra Connors, Pinellas Park Senior; Marjorie Emr, Walsingham; Judith Kavourgias, Madeira Beach Middle and Peggy Kerr, Madeira Beach Middle. more

MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMIT LAUNCHES REFORM EFFORT

PESPA, PCTA and the District hosted a Middle School Summit January 10 at the Administration Building. Each middle school was invited to send a five person team to discuss the opportunities for reorganizing the district’s middle schools. The summit was a follow-up to last year’s strategic conversations on middle schools that PCTA and PESPA sponsored with a grant from the National Education Association (NEA). “Our middle school staffs are working as hard as they can,” said PCTA President Michelle Dennard. “But trying to fit the state curriculum, elective opportunities, career exploration and assistance to struggling students into a traditional six period program has stretched our schools to the breaking point.” more...
