Message from LCEA President...Call To Action 3/24/09
Call to action...it's up to us!!
Our individual and collective votes and voices are important and must be heard by our elected legislators! Will they listen? I don't know. But they hold the purse strings for our profession and therefore for our classrooms.
Statewide, there have been many events to advocate for public education. The Make Our Schools a Priority rally at UCF gathered 6,500 stakeholders. There were eight LCEA members there and one of them was my husband, George. We sat with the VOICE group of 20+.
Locally, there have been two town hall meetings here in Lake County - one at East Ridge Middle and one at Tavares Middle. Less than 40 stakeholders attended.
Your local LCEA lobbying group met for over two hours with Representative Hays. Many of you have contacted our local legislators by mail and/or email.
I know and understand your busy schedules and time constraints, but our future and the future of public education is at stake. WE MUST STAND TOGETHER!! Our membership is over 1500 now and we need to send 1500+ messages to Tallahassee!
This month, I am providing each member with three postcards addressed to Representatives Hays and O'Toole and Senator Baker. These are a donation from me to comply with rules of use of LCEA political dollars. All you need to do is write a message on the back, put on a stamp, and mail it. Emails are good but I hope receiving 1500+ postcards will get their attention!!
PLEASE HELP WITH THIS POSTCARD CAMPAIGN!!
We must let them know our votes and voices are important! By standing together, united we will be heard.
Together you have achieved teaching and learning excellence in your classrooms and schools. Now together we can make a difference in Tallahassee. Far too long, we have allowed non-educators to make educational decisions without input from teachers. Now is the time for that to change.
Please join me...our students and profession deserve it.
Thanks for all you do every day. I truly appreciate you and thank you for giving me another two years to advocate for you.
Together in teaching and learning,
Your grateful president,
B
